Master of Orion 2 - Linux version fails. I can't find the executable for the GOG version so the config file trick doesn't work. Both the Linux and Windows/DOS versions fail to work. Heroes of Might & Magic Chronicles 1-8 - Yes, just put the config files in the executable's directory -Heroes of Might & Magic 1, 2, 3, 4 - Yes, just put the config files in the executable's directory -Interstate 76 - No (asks for a CD to be inserted) -Interstate 82 - No (Crashes to desktop) -Knights of the Sky - Yes for the Windows/DOS version but not Linux -Master of Orion 1 - Thankfully Valve fixed this game on Steam. Empire Earth - No (Freezes after game logo appears as if there is an error message we can't see) -Empire Earth 2 - Yes, this ran very nicely. DevilutionX (look on github) for linux seems to be the easiest way to play it. Crusader: No Regret - Windows/DOS version works -Crusader: No Remorse - Does not work (intro video stutters, becomes unresponsive) -Desperados - Yes, the Linux version runs fine oddly enough -Diablo + Hellfire - NO (crashes after initial Launcher appears and acts like it needs a CD to be inserted).

I prioritized games exclusive to GOG or that have better versions on GOG (Heroes of Might & Magic 3 Complete). Now here is the hard data results for specific GOG games I have tested. Try the Windows version of games if the Linux version fails. I just copy/paste these from the support folder. Put Dosbox config files in the executable's folder. If Heroic Games Launcher can supplement these missing libraries somehow in the future then maybe Linux versions will become more viable.
Maybe this is sacrilege to Linux experts but I am a simple gamer new to non-Windows OS and just want to play the games. There are several missing Linux libraries when installing through Heroic that you are better off just going with the Windows version and letting Proton work to get the game running. Also, make sure to try the Windows versions of the games if you can't get the Linux versions to work. This at least tells Heroic what WINE settings to use. Also, make sure to select a specific proton version after installing the game and then change it back to experimental if you want under the settings. Copying and pasting these files into the executable's directory magically makes the game run when launching from Heroic Games Launcher. Typically these config files can be found in a "support" folder within the GOG game files. DOSBOX games, even on Steam, don't always seem to work but a general rule, if you don't mind a Windows version of Dosbox getting run through Proton, would be to place the Dosbox configuration files within the same directory as the game's executable. Obviously you should prioritize Steam versions of games if they exist. Maybe we can help each other out and figure out solutions together.
I wanted to summarize my experiences and offer advice for future gamers like me who may want to refer to this post for advice. I am a classic 90s game enthusiast and was very disappointed when I got my Deck and tried to get the GOG classics running. I have had my Steam Deck for almost 3-4 weeks now and have done extensive testing on getting games to work using the Heroic Games Launcher and specifically GOG games.
